The Code2X Tool

AI-Powered Code Migration with Code2X

Code2X analyzes legacy codebases and transforms business and technical logic into target code aligned with a defined target architecture. HMS configures the transformation process, verifies the results, and supports integration into the target environment.

Automation Starts with Code Analysis

Before code can be transformed automatically, structures, dependencies, and recurring patterns must be identified. Code2X creates a technical model of the existing codebase for this purpose.

HMS tailors transformation rules, target architecture, and verification procedures to each specific project. Code2X can then automatically process defined modules or larger codebases.

How Code2X Supports Legacy Modernization

Code2X supports the analysis and transformation of large codebases. The tool automates repetitive tasks and makes transformation rules and results traceable.

Make Complexity and Dependencies Visible

Code2X inventories source code and analyzes structures and technical dependencies. This provides a foundation for assessing effort, risks, and viable transformation paths.

Align Transformation with the Target Architecture

Transformation rules and specifications are tailored to the target platform, integration requirements, and operating model. The generated code is therefore designed to fit the intended system environment.

Automate Recurring Tasks

Defined code modules can be processed in manageable units. This reduces the manual effort required for recurring analysis and transformation steps.

Make Transformation Results Traceable

Transformation steps and target code can be reviewed. Depending on the project, Code2X can document the transformation logic and technical decisions.

The Process

How Code2X Works

Code2X combines analysis, code generation, and technical verification into a defined workflow. The individual steps are tailored to the source code, target language, and system environment.

The Code2X parser captures structures, dependencies, and business logic in the existing source code. This results in a semantic model that serves as the basis for further transformation.

Agentic AI translates the analyzed code into the desired target language based on defined strategies. The Code2X strategy system takes into account recurring patterns and project-specific characteristics.

Code2X can also process large code repositories containing thousands of files. Defined transformation strategies can be applied to related files and modules.

The target code is tailored to the intended system environment. The code structure, import logic, and technical standards of the target architecture are incorporated into the transformation.

Upon request, Code2X documents metadata and the transformation logic used. This facilitates testing, handoff, and future development.

In a live demo, we’ll show you how Code2X analyzes source code and converts it into a defined target architecture. We’ll use typical use cases to illustrate the individual analysis and transformation steps.

If you’d like to assess the potential of your own codebase, we’ll work with you to select representative components. Based on this, we can evaluate complexity, automation potential, and the feasibility of a proof of concept.

Areas of Application

Aligning Code2X with Source Code and Target System

Modernization projects vary in terms of programming languages, system structures, and target architectures. Code2X is therefore configured on a project-by-project basis. At the outset, HMS assesses which components can be processed automatically and where business or technical decisions are still required.

Analytical Codebases

Code2X can be used to analyze and transform established analytics and data applications. HMS brings particular expertise in SAS, Python, R, and MATLAB to this process.

Data Processing and Workflows

Existing processing logic can be migrated to modern data pipelines, executable workflows, or other defined target structures.

Additional Languages and Technology Stacks

The feasibility of supporting additional programming languages and tech stacks is evaluated based on the existing codebase, the target architecture, and the desired scope of automation.

Sample Use Case

Migrating SAS Code with Code2X

SAS migrations are a specific application area for Code2X. The tool supports the analysis of extensive SAS codebases and the transfer of business logic to target languages such as Python or R. HMS covers the planning and implementation of SAS migrations on a separate page.

More on SAS Migration

Choose the Target Architecture Instead of Adapting It

Each target platform has its own requirements for structure, integration, and execution. Our migration tool automatically accounts for these differences. This ensures that you don’t end up with generic target code, but rather precisely tailored templates and structures for your system environment.

Preconfigured scenarios and project-specific templates enable you to prepare migrations efficiently and adapt them consistently to both technical and organizational requirements.

Code for Interactive Data Analysis

SAS code is converted into structured Python cells - easy to understand, annotated, and ready to use directly in JupyterHub or VS Code

Compatible with the Microsoft ecosystem

Our target code structure supports seamless integration with Microsoft services.

Workflow Control for ETL and DAGs

SAS processes are transferred as executable DAGs - ideal for time- and data-driven jobs.

Why HMS

Tool-Supported Transformation with Software Engineering Expertise

Code2X is not a standalone code converter. HMS integrates the tool with architectural work, software engineering, and technical implementation. This ensures that target code, system integration, and ongoing operations remain part of the same modernization decision.

  • Analysis before transformation: HMS evaluates the codebase, dependencies, and target architecture before components are processed automatically.
  • Target architecture instead of standard output: Transformation rules are tailored to the platform, integration, and operating model.
  • Agentic AI with technical oversight: HMS uses Agentic AI for appropriate work steps and verifies the results within the project context.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Code2X

If you can't find your question here, we’d be happy to assist you personally.

Generic converters often focus on individual blocks of code. Code2X incorporates analysis, target architecture, transformation rules, and target code verification into the modernization process. HMS provides the engineering expertise required to define the transformation approach, verify the results, and integrate the target code.

HMS has extensive experience with analytical languages and codebases, including SAS, Python, R, and MATLAB. We evaluate whether Code2X can be used for other programming languages or tech stacks based on the codebase and the desired target architecture.

Initially, HMS analyzes the existing codebase and works with the customer to define the transformation path and the target architecture. Code2X then migrates selected components to the target structure based on defined rules. The results are reviewed, documented, and prepared for integration.

To assess the automation potential, we analyze representative sections of the codebase. The scope, dependencies, and recurring patterns reveal which steps can be automated and where business or technical review remains necessary.

For a proof of concept, we select representative components and define the target architecture together with you. Code2X then transforms the agreed scope. We evaluate result quality, automation potential, and the effort required for broader modernization.
