SAS Viya Migration to Azure for an Automotive Bank

Move risk reporting and analytics to the cloud without slowing down business units or holding up regulatory approvals—using a SAS Viya environment on Microsoft Azure.

Management Summary

For a leading financial services organization, HMS modernized a business-critical SAS environment and supported the transition from on-premises to SAS Viya. The scope of work ranged from cloud infrastructure and automation to code modifications, ops readiness, testing, and compliance reviews.

Projektziel

Migration und Modernisierung SAS-basierter Plattformen zu SAS Viya auf Microsoft Azure

Wichtigste Kernfunktionen

  • Migration von Programmen, Projekten und Daten in die Azure Cloud
  • Aufbau der Cloud-Infrastruktur mit Kubernetes und Automatisierungstools
  • Unterstützung bei Backlog, Stakeholder-Kommunikation und Ops-Readiness

Tech Stack

The key was not to view the SAS migration in isolation as a purely technical matter, but to manage system shutdown schedules, organizational changes, and regulatory reviews as an integrated process.

The Starting Point

A leading financial services organization needed to modernize its SAS-based platforms and transition them to a cloud-based target environment. The pressure to act was high: Fixed shutdown dates for the existing on-premises platform left little leeway, while programs, projects, and data all had to be fully migrated.

The situation was further complicated by a corporate spin-off. Permissions, user accounts, email structures, subscriptions, and GitHub configurations had to be factored into the migration plan. The new environment not only had to function technically but also had to comply with regulatory requirements and internal governance guidelines.

For business units, IT architecture, and governance leaders, this required robust planning, transparent dependencies, and close coordination across technical and organizational boundaries.

The HMS Solution

SAS Viya Migration with Cloud Infrastructure, Governance, and Operational Approval

HMS provided technical, organizational, and methodological support for the migration. Our contributions ranged from project management and stakeholder communication to setting up the Azure-based target environment and preparing for operational approval.

Project Structure and Collaboration

HMS structured backlogs, clarified expectations, and facilitated communication between business units, IT architecture, and governance. Appropriate project and collaboration tools were set up to support collaboration and integrated into the ongoing management process.

Cloud Infrastructure and Migration

The team built the Azure-based infrastructure using Kubernetes and implemented migration and automation tools. Programs, projects, and data were migrated to the new SAS Viya environment. Where necessary, HMS adapted existing code to the target environment.

Adjustments Due to the Corporate Split

The organizational changes had a direct impact on technical structures. HMS provided support in making adjustments to permissions, user accounts, email structures, subscriptions, and GitHub to ensure that the new environment aligned with the revised organizational structure.

Operations, Testing, and Compliance

To obtain operational approval, HMS supported operational readiness and testing by the business units. Compliance audits, including IFRS 9 reviews, confirmed the stability and regulatory approval of the new platform.

Customer Benefits

SAS Platforms Migrated to the Cloud on Schedule

The migration to SAS Viya helped the customer meet fixed decommissioning deadlines, transfer programs, projects, and data to a modern cloud environment, and ensure transparent compliance with regulatory requirements during operations.

More predictable

On-Time Migration Despite Fixed Shutdown Dates

Programs, projects, and data were migrated to the new environment within the specified timeframe.

More understandable

Greater transparency regarding dependencies and governance

Backlog structure, stakeholder communication, and project management made technical and organizational dependencies more tangible.

Closer to operations

Deployable Environment for SAS Viya on Azure

Ops readiness, testing, and compliance audits supported the transition to a stable and regulatory-compliant target environment.
